Halo dog collar price10/31/2023 ![]() The initial training was impossible as it didn't work and would frequently just not move. The update released shortly after I received my collar worked great. Also the range is pretty short to stay connected. So often the app was counterproductive to training as it would get stuck beeping with a warning when it lost signal. The connection is poor at best where I am. The only problems I have are with the app. He now stays within the fence and is learning the boundaries! So before I contacted support for training help I decided to try the correction on a low setting and that worked. I finally was able to use a long lead with treats to test it, but he still quickly learned to just avoid the fence, and it felt like it was going the wrong way. However he was too clever and was watching me more than listening. I knew even before purchasing that my dog would be smart enough to get it. Is SpotOn waterproof? Can it be used when in the rain/snow or for swimming? Click here for more information on the tech that powers SpotOn. SpotOn includes Forest Mode which improves accuracy in areas with heavy tree cover. SpotOn uses a dual feed antenna that is designed to detect and ignore reflected signals. Unlike other systems, SpotOn can simultaneously receive and track signals from up to 30 satellites across four navigation satellite constellations including GPS (US), Galileo (European Union), Glonass (Russia), and BeiDou (China). Areas with large objects like buildings, hills, and heavy tree cover can reflect GPS signals, reducing accuracy. GPS systems are more accurate in a large flat open field where there is a clear view of the sky. The more satellites a GPS system can detect the greater the accuracy. ![]() GPS satellites are continuously moving across the sky, above and below the horizon. ![]() The accuracy of all GPS systems depends upon several factors including the quality of the GPS receiver and antenna, the number of satellites detected, and how much of the sky is in clear view from the ground. As a point of comparison GPS-enabled smartphones are typically accurate only to within 16 feet under open sky and greater than 16 feet near buildings, bridges, and under trees. SpotOn is accurate to three feet under open sky and ten feet under heavy tree cover or near buildings. Will SpotOn work in areas with no cellular service? The annual or semi-annual plans are discounted and come with a 90-day free trial so you can see if cellular works for you. You purchase a cellular subscription for your SpotOn Fence through us. Receive notifications if your collar battery is low or your dog escapes. See your dog's location anytime, which is helpful if your fence is large. Cellular enables the SpotOn Fence to communicate with your phone over long distances. With an optional cellular subscription, you can unlock some additional features. With SpotOn Fence, you do not need a cellular subscription to create, manage and activate fences or contain your dog. Just like your old Garmin® navigation system for your car! Unlike your phone, SpotOn Fence can access GPS without a cellular connection. GPS is available anywhere you can see the sky, and it’s free.

Homemade vanilla extract gifts10/31/2023 ![]() If you’re interested, read how to make an alcohol-free vanilla extract. Glycerin takes much longer to extract the vanilla flavor than alcohol and also imparts a sweetness to the extract which you may or may not like. Alcohol-free vanilla extractįor those avoiding alcohol either because of your local government regulations or any other reason, you can make a different type of vanilla extract using glycerin. I just started my latest batch with rum, so I’ll know better soon. It supposedly provides a smoother vanilla extract than vodka. Hearing people rave about the flavor, I had to try it too! I have to say that I understand why so many people love it! Perhaps, the name got people to try using bourbon in their extracts. Instead, it’s named after the variety of vanilla used (bourbon vanilla). With time, I saw recipes for bourbon vanilla extract made with bourbon whisky.Ĭommercial “bourbon vanilla extract” isn’t really normally made made with bourbon whisky, though. You can also customize your vanilla extract by choosing different alcohol bases for your vanilla infusion.Īt first, I always made my vanilla extract with vodka, which seems to be the most popular choice. They tend to be slightly thinner and subtle in flavor. Mexican vanilla beans also come from the vanilla planifolia plant and are very similar to the Madagascar vanilla.Tahitian vanilla beans, from the Tahitensis species (a cross between Vanilla planifolia and Vanilla odorata), have a more exotic, tropical flavor that is a bit unique. They provide a classic tasting vanilla flavor. Bourbon vanilla beans, or Madagascar vanilla beans, come from the Planifolia orchid.Vanilla beans can vary in flavor depending on where they are from. On the other hand, if you buy vanilla beans online in bulk, you can save a lot by making your own! To save even more, choose “extract grade” vanilla beans that tend to be smaller and drier but also much less expensive. If you choose vanilla beans from the supermarket that are sold individually, you may not save money by making your own extract. To be considered a true extract, the alcohol should be at least 35% strength (70 proof). Homemade vanilla extract only uses 2 ingredients, vanilla beans and alcohol. To avoid all that grossness, the first years I was living here, I brought vanilla extract in bulk back to Spain with me each time I went back to visit the US, but I finally decided it made more sense to make it myself. So, if you are a vegetarian or vegan, and are eating something with “natural vanilla flavoring”, you may unwittingly be consuming an animal product, and a not-so-appealing one at that! Because of the location of the castor sacs, at the base of the beaver’s tail, castoreum may also contain urine and anal gland secretions! Yum! Castoreum is a secretion from the castor sacs of beavers. Natural vanilla flavor can actually come from beavers in the form of castoreum. That statement sounds crazy, but it’s all too true! Not all vanilla flavorings are what they seem… Where does vanilla flavoring come from?ĭid you know that even “naturally” flavoured vanilla products might not actually be using vanilla? You can also ensure that you are using a true vanilla flavoring that comes from the vanilla bean. You can choose which ingredients you want to use to get the flavor you prefer. It’s not just about the money, though, it’s about the control. Pure vanilla extract can be pricey, so, if you can get a good deal on vanilla beans, you can save yourself money. Even if you can easily find vanilla extract where you live, though, it could make sense to make your own. I choose to make my own vanilla extract because I couldn’t find it easily here. As for the vanilla flavoring? Those of you that have been following me for a while probably know that I’m not a big fan of chemically produced artificial products. While I do love vanilla beans, they aren’t always the most convenient thing to use for most recipes. Instead, they normally have vanilla beans or artificial vanilla flavoring. Most stores don’t sell pure vanilla extract. Here in Spain, though, vanilla isn’t as commonly used. Vanilla extract shows up in almost every baking recipe ever written. Anybody that has been baking American recipes for a while knows that many recipes call for vanilla extract! It’s not just for vanilla ice cream.

Multi tool pliers led10/31/2023 ![]() The Free P2 is over 2½ ounces heavier than the Skeletool CX, but it has a slender, streamlined design and comes with a pocket clip. ![]() After we tested the Free P2 for several weeks, other full-size multi-tools, such as the classic Leatherman Wave+, started to feel clunky and laborious to open. You can even deploy the pliers one-handed, with just a flip of the wrist. With its handles closed, you can access and open all of the tools with a single hand, a unique feature in the world of multi-tools. The Free P2, released in 2019, is an entirely new design for Leatherman. If you are seeking a larger multi-tool, yet one that is extremely easy to use, we recommend the Leatherman Free P2. But this model is so sturdily built, we’d be surprised if you needed to use the warranty other Leathermans we’ve owned and used for over a decade have held up perfectly.Ĭlosed dimensions: 4⅛ by 1¼ by ½ inches Weight: 5.2 ounces Blade length: 2⅝ inches Tools included: needle-nose pliers, wire cutter, bottle opener, Phillips screwdriver (2), flat screwdriver (2), carabiner clip ![]() And the Skeletool is backed by a 25-year warranty. This multi-tool’s two Phillips and two flathead screwdrivers capably handle the most common screws. The CX’s pliers unfold easily, have the precision to pull a small splinter, and are comfortable to hold, thanks to the asymmetric handle. It can also clip onto a belt or backpack with either a pocket clip or a carabiner (which can double as an easy-access bottle opener). Other multi-tools are so bulky that they need to be carried in a belt sheath, but the lighter 1, slimmer Skeletool fits comfortably in a pocket. And its high-quality, 154CM blade steel holds an edge longer than most multi-tool blades. Its knife deploys and locks smoothly with one hand-without your having to first open up the pliers. Of all the multi-tools we tried, the Skeletool CX is the one we kept reaching for long after testing concluded, and it’s the one we still carry daily, three years later.

Piezoelectric element10/31/2023 The principle of operation of a piezoelectric sensor is that a physical dimension, transformed into a force, acts on two opposing faces of the sensing element. Most types of gas burners and ranges have a built-in piezo based injection systems. That benefit from their use: High Voltage and Power SourcesĪn example of applications in this area is the electric cigarette lighter, where pressing a button causes a spring-loaded hammer to hit a piezoelectric crystal, thereby producing a sufficiently high voltage that electric current flows across a small spark gap, heating and igniting the gas. Applications Best Suited for the Piezoelectric Effectĭue to the intrinsic characteristics of piezoelectric materials, there are numerous applications To date, this initiative to develop new lead-free piezoelectric materials has resulted in a variety of new piezoelectric materials which are more environmentally safe. In recent years, due to the growing environmental concern regarding toxicity in lead-containing devices and the RoHS directive followed within the European Union, there has been a push to develop lead free piezoelectric materials. An example of man-made piezoelectric materials includes barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate. Some naturally piezoelectric occurring materials include Berlinite (structurally identical to quartz), cane sugar, quartz, Rochelle salt, topaz, tourmaline, and bone (dry bone exhibits some piezoelectric properties due to the apatite crystals, and the piezoelectric effect is generally thought to act as a biological force sensor). There are many materials, both natural and man-made, that exhibit a range of piezoelectric effects. This intense research resulted in the development of barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate, two materials that had very specific properties suitable for particular applications. Although quartz crystals were the first commercially exploited piezoelectric material and still used in sonar detection applications, scientists kept searching for higher performance materials. Over the next few decades, new piezoelectric materials and new applications for those materials were explored and developed.ĭuring World War II, research groups in the US, Russia and Japan discovered a new class of man-made materials, called ferroelectrics, which exhibited piezoelectric constants many times higher than natural piezoelectric materials. This initial use of piezoelectricity in sonar created intense international developmental interest in piezoelectric devices. The breakout of World War I marked the introduction of the first practical application for piezoelectric devices, which was the sonar device. Over the next few decades, piezoelectricity remained in the laboratory, something to be experimented on as more work was undertaken to explore the great potential of the piezoelectric effect. ![]() ![]() Their initial demonstration showed that quartz and Rochelle salt exhibited the most piezoelectricity ability at the time. By combining their knowledge of pyroelectricity with their understanding of crystal structures and behavior, the Curie brothers demonstrated the first piezoelectric effect by using crystals of tourmaline, quartz, topaz, cane sugar, and Rochelle salt. The direct piezoelectric effect was first seen in 1880, and was initiated by the brothers Pierre and Jacques Curie. The piezoelectric effect also has its use in more mundane applications as well, such as acting as the ignition source for cigarette lighters. It is also the basis of a number of scientific instrumental techniques with atomic resolution, such as scanning probe microscopes (STM, AFM, etc). The piezoelectric effect is very useful within many applications that involve the production and detection of sound, generation of high voltages, electronic frequency generation, microbalances, and ultra fine focusing of optical assemblies. When reversed, an outer electrical field either stretches or compresses the piezoelectric material. When piezoelectric material is placed under mechanical stress, a shifting of the positive and negative charge centers in the material takes place, which then results in an external electrical field. ![]() One of the unique characteristics of the piezoelectric effect is that it is reversible, meaning that materials exhibiting the direct piezoelectric effect (the generation of electricity when stress is applied) also exhibit the converse piezoelectric effect (the generation of stress when an electric field is applied). The word Piezoelectric is derived from the Greek piezein, which means to squeeze or press, and piezo, which is Greek for “push”. Piezoelectric Effect is the ability of certain materials to generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress. |
